Best colors for cool undertones.
Six sub-seasons fall under cool undertones — three in the Summer family, three in the Winter family. This guide gives you the full palette for each, plus shared rules that apply to all cool undertones (metals, makeup undertones, common mistakes).
Short answer: Cool undertones flatter blue-based colors — true white, navy, cool emerald, sapphire, raspberry, plum, magenta, cool gray. Silver and platinum metals work best. Avoid pure orange, mustard, warm camel, golden yellow, and peachy pink near the face.
Are you cool-undertoned?
Three reliable signals — if at least two agree, you likely have a cool undertone:
- Vein color on the inside of your wrist: blue or purple = cool. Green = warm. Mixed = neutral.
- Metal preference: silver flatters your skin more than gold. Gold makes you look sallow.
- Sun reaction: you tend to burn before tanning. Cool undertones often correlate with sun-sensitive skin.
If you're cool-undertoned, your color season is in one of these six sub-seasons:
The six cool sub-seasons
Light Summer
Cool undertones with the lightest overall coloring. Soft and watery: powder blue, mauve, dove gray, soft pink. Avoid pure black and very saturated jewel tones — both overpower light features.
Cool Summer
The "True Summer." Berry, raspberry, navy, true white. The classic cool-summer wardrobe — neither too light nor too saturated, with strong cool clarity.
Soft Summer
Cool with very muted features. Dusty rose, sage with blue cast, smoke gray, smudged-pastel tones. Saturation washes you out — keep everything dusty and watercolor.
Deep Winter
Strong contrast with cool undertone. True black, pure white, jewel emerald, magenta, sapphire. Earth tones flatten your contrast — stay in cool and saturated.
Cool Winter
Pure cool — icy pastels stand against dark cool jewel tones. Your contrast is high enough for true white, soft enough for ice pink.
Bright Winter
Maximum chroma — hot fuchsia, cobalt, true emerald, lemon yellow. You hold the loudest colors in any palette without being overwhelmed.

Universal rules for cool undertones
Metals
Silver, platinum, white gold all flatter. Rose gold works if you lean cool-neutral (Light Summer, Cool Summer). Yellow gold tends to look sallow against the face — keep gold to earrings (away from skin) if you need to wear it.
Makeup undertones
- Foundation: cool, neutral-cool, or pink-based. Avoid yellow-toned foundations — they oxidize orange on cool skin.
- Lipstick: berry, raspberry, plum, true red with blue undertone (think MAC Russian Red over MAC Lady Danger).
- Blush: cool pink, mauve, rose. Avoid coral and peach.
- Eyeshadow: cool browns, taupe, silver, plum, navy. Avoid warm browns and golds near the lash line.
Hair color (if dyeing)
Cool brunette, ash blonde, platinum, blue-black, plum tints. Avoid golden blondes, warm coppers, and red-browns — they pull warmth into your overall coloring and clash with your underlying cool undertone.
Denim
Cool washes — true blue, dark indigo, black denim. Avoid warm distressed washes and beige-tinted denim.
Common mistakes
- Wearing pure black when you're Light Summer. Black is too heavy for light cool seasons. Soft charcoal or navy reads cooler-looking without the weight.
- Wearing ivory or cream when you need pure white. Off-whites have a yellow base — they wash out cool skin. Reach for pure cool whites instead.
- Pairing camel with a Soft Summer palette. Camel is one of the warmest neutrals — it kills the gentle cool of Soft Summer. Cool tan, dove gray, or mushroom is the cool-undertone equivalent.
- Gold-based foundation. The most common color mistake in cool-undertone makeup. Yellow undertones oxidize and shift orange on cool skin within 2–3 hours.
- Warm-toned hair dye for cool brunettes. Going golden or copper as a cool-undertone person reads costume-y. Cool brunette, ash, or plum stays in your lane.
Can cool undertones wear warm colors at all?
Yes — in small accents, away from the face. A mustard scarf, a camel bag, a warm-leaning belt — all fine. The rule is: anything closer than 6 inches from your face should be in your cool palette. Below the waist or in accessories, you have more flexibility.
The exception is if you're cool-neutral (you tested ambiguous on the vein test). Cool-neutrals can wear a wider range of warm colors than pure cool, especially in the Soft Summer and Cool Winter palettes which already include some neutral tones.
