Build a Soft Autumn capsule on camel, soft khaki and cream as neutrals, then add 4–6 muted warm heroes — dusty terracotta, sage, fawn, muted gold. Skip pure black and icy pastels entirely: everything in a Soft Autumn capsule should look slightly “dusty,” like late-September light.
These twelve swatches are the working anchors of the Soft Autumn palette — the same anchors Tonebook expands into a personal 24-color palette from a selfie.
Camel is the single most useful Soft Autumn neutral — it does what black does for a Winter. Back it with soft khaki or mushroom for bottoms and warm cream (never optic white) for shirts and tees. For the dark anchor, use deep olive-brown (#4E4332) instead of black: it grounds outfits without the harsh contrast that flattens muted coloring.
Pick 4–6 from: dusty terracotta, sage green, fawn, muted gold, soft olive, warm rose-brown. Every hero should pass the squint test — if you squint and the color still shouts, it's too saturated for this palette.
| Role | Soft Autumn version |
|---|---|
| Bottoms (3–4) | Camel trousers · soft khaki chinos · olive-brown denim · a fawn skirt |
| Tops (6–8) | Cream tee ×2 · sage knit · dusty terracotta blouse · muted gold sweater · warm rose-brown shirt |
| Outerwear (2) | Camel coat (the Soft Autumn signature piece) · soft olive utility jacket |
| Accents (2) | Muted gold scarf · terracotta bag — your boldest pieces, still muted |
Because every piece shares the Soft Autumn palette, almost any top works with any bottom — that cross-compatibility is the whole point of building the capsule inside one season. The general method is in capsule wardrobes by color season.
Pure black (deep olive-brown does its job better), optic white (use cream), fuchsia and icy pastels (they belong to your opposite, the cool-bright seasons), and anything neon. If a color looks straight-from-the-tube bright, it will wear you instead of the reverse.
Soft Autumn's sisters are Soft Summer (sharing mutedness) and True/Warm Autumn (sharing warmth). Borrow Soft Summer's taupes and soft slates for cooler-toned officewear, and True Autumn's deeper rust and olive when you want more punch — keep borrowed accents away from the face.
Not sure Soft Autumn is actually your season? Mistypes almost always land in a sister season — take the free 60-second quiz (it reports a runner-up, not just one answer) before you invest in a capsule.

Occasionally and away from the face — black trousers are fine, a black turtleneck is not. Deep olive-brown or chocolate reads almost as formal while keeping your face lit.
A working starter is about 16 pieces: 3–4 bottoms, 6–8 tops, 2 outerwear and 2 accents, all from the muted warm palette so every top works with every bottom.
Pure black, optic white, fuchsia, icy pastels and anything neon or jewel-bright. Soft Autumn is the most muted warm season — saturation is the enemy, not darkness.
