Build a Soft Summer capsule on soft charcoal, taupe and soft white as neutrals, then add 4–6 muted cool heroes — dusty rose, smoke blue, sage-grey, mauve. Nothing in a Soft Summer capsule should be fully saturated: think watercolor, not gouache.
These twelve swatches are the working anchors of the Soft Summer palette — the same anchors Tonebook expands into a personal 24-color palette from a selfie.
Soft charcoal (#454245) is your black substitute — dark enough for tailoring, soft enough not to fight your low contrast. Taupe and mushroom carry the mid range, and soft white (never optic white) handles shirts and layers. Grey-blue denim beats true indigo.
Pick 4–6 from: dusty rose, smoke blue, mauve, sage-grey, soft plum, pewter-lavender. The Soft Summer test: every hero should look like it was mixed with a drop of grey — because in this palette, it was.
| Role | Soft Summer version |
|---|---|
| Bottoms (3–4) | Soft charcoal trousers · taupe chinos · grey-blue denim · a mauve midi skirt |
| Tops (6–8) | Soft white tee ×2 · dusty rose knit · smoke-blue shirt · sage-grey sweater · soft plum blouse |
| Outerwear (2) | Soft charcoal coat · taupe trench |
| Accents (2) | Mauve scarf · pewter bag — muted even at their boldest |
Because every piece shares the Soft Summer palette, almost any top works with any bottom — that cross-compatibility is the whole point of building the capsule inside one season. The general method is in capsule wardrobes by color season.
Pure black and optic white (your contrast is the lowest of the cool seasons — the hard extremes wear you), orange and warm gold (wrong temperature), and anything jewel-bright like cobalt or fuchsia. Saturation washes Soft Summers out faster than the wrong undertone does.
Soft Summer's sisters are True Summer (sharing coolness) and Soft Autumn (sharing mutedness). Borrow True Summer's soft navy when you need a more formal dark, and Soft Autumn's mushroom and stone for warmer-leaning casualwear.
Not sure Soft Summer is actually your season? Mistypes almost always land in a sister season — take the free 60-second quiz (it reports a runner-up, not just one answer) before you invest in a capsule.

It's the least flattering of the cool seasons for black — Soft Summer has muted, low-contrast coloring and pure black overpowers it. Soft charcoal or deep grey-plum reads nearly as formal and keeps the face soft.
About 16 to start: 3–4 bottoms, 6–8 tops, 2 outerwear, 2 accents — all muted and cool so everything cross-combines.
Temperature. Both are fully muted, but Soft Summer's neutrals are grey-based (charcoal, taupe, soft white) while Soft Autumn's are golden-based (camel, khaki, cream). If your best metal is silver, build the Soft Summer version.
